St. Martin's Day is a holiday celebrated by many European countries, including Germany. It is a celebration of generosity and giving based on the life of Martin of Tours, who famously cut his fine cloak in half and gave it to a beggar.
Here at West Elementary, we celebrate St. Martin's Day every November with a short presentation in the school and then a lantern parade around the neighborhood. Students will learn traditional German lantern songs and make lanterns in class.
